From Zero to Ethical Hacker: A Beginner's Roadmap

You do not need a computer-science degree or years of IT experience to become an ethical hacker. With the right roadmap and consistent practice, you can go from absolute beginner to job-ready. Here is how.

Step 1: Build the Foundations

Before hacking anything, you need to understand how systems work:

• Networking — TCP/IP, ports, protocols, DNS, how the internet works
• Operating systems — Linux (especially) and Windows basics
• Basic scripting — a little Python or Bash goes a long way

Step 2: Learn Security Fundamentals

Understand the core concepts — the CIA triad, threats, vulnerabilities, attack types and defenses. A certification like CompTIA Security+ is a great structured start.

Step 3: Get Hands-On

Theory alone will not make you a hacker. Practise legally in:

• Virtual labs and home labs
• Capture-the-flag (CTF) challenges
• Intentionally vulnerable machines

Step 4: Get Certified in Ethical Hacking

Earn the CEH v13 AI certification — the world's most recognised ethical-hacking credential — to validate your skills and clear HR filters.

Step 5: Specialise & Build a Portfolio

Pick a direction (web, network, cloud, red-teaming), document your labs and projects, and build a presence on GitHub/LinkedIn.

Step 6: Apply With Placement Support

Use resume help, mock interviews and referrals to land your first role — SOC Analyst, Junior Pen Tester or Security Analyst.
